ANNOUNCEMENT THREE-DAY WORKSHOP (20, 21 and 22 MARCH 2005)

SAND TRANSPORT AND MORPHOLOGY OF OFFSHORE MINING PITS

(EU-SANDPIT PROJECT)

in Hotel VILLA IGIEIA on the coast of PALERMO, SICILY, ITALY

During the last three years (2002-2005), the European Commission has supported the SANDPIT project on the modelling of sand transport and morphology in and near offshore mining pits.

A consortium of Universities and  Hydraulic Institutes (coordinated by Prof.  Leo van Rijn) worked on various topics in three workpackages:
1)   Guidelines and tools for management of sand mining (workpackage-leader: Prof. R. Soulsby),
2)   Data sets of laboratory and field experiments (workpackage-leader: Prof.  P. Hoekstra),
3)   Development and improvement of predictive tools (workpackage-leader: Prof.  A. Davies).

The final meeting of the SANDPIT project is an open workshop in Sicily, where the main project results will be presented and discussed. End-users of research institutes, consulting companies and governmental authorities are invited to participate in this workshop to:
·       learn about the latest developments of the modelling of bed roughness, sand transport and morphology in the offshore environment,
·       learn about practical guidelines and tools for the management of sand mining in the coastal environment,
·       discuss future research needs and developments.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME

SUNDAY 20 MARCH 2005; Field excursion to Palermo coast

MONDAY 21 MARCH 2005; Presentations on practical guidelines and tools

·       mean annual sand transport and budget,
·       optimum location and dimensions of mining pits,
